Cheep Cheeps are enemies in the Mario video game series, first appearing in Super Mario Bros. for the NES. They are the most notable aquatic creature in the series, and have appeared in most of the Mario video games. They usually appear in the 2D series of games, but only have minor appearances in the 3D series. In Super Mario Sunshine, you would be able to turn them into platforms by making Yoshi spray juice at them once they jumped out of the water.

They apparently have their own language according to Paper Mario, though they've managed to learn english to some extent, as some have been able to do so, albeit not perfectly seeing that they often times mess up the words.

[edit] Big Bertha

Big Berthas are a sub-species of Cheep-Cheep that live deep in the sea. They first appeared in the game Super Mario Bros. 3. She carries Baby Cheeps in her mouth, and occasionally spits them out, to protect herself. After a few seconds, the Baby Cheep will return to its mother's mouth. Big Bertha's male counterpart is Boss Bass, a fish that swims on the surface, not deep in the water. In Super Mario 64 DS, Big Berthas took the place of Bubbas.

Baby Cheep is a small Cheep Cheep that is expelled out of Big Bertha's mouth.

[edit] Cheep Chomp

A Cheep-Chomp is a giant purple Cheep-Cheep will try to eat the player. The appear in New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS, and have yet to appear elsewhere. Unless the player has in possession a Starman, the Cheep Chomp will KO its opponent if it manages to gobble them up. However, they can be easily dodged or killed with a Fireball in hand.

The name of a Cheep-Chomp is probably influenced by the ground based Chain Chomp found in a multitude of Mario video games.

This green Cheep-Cheep will follow you until you swim past it. There are also Giant Deep Cheeps, which are bigger versions of Deep Cheeps.
