Big Boss, real name John, also known as Naked Snake was a renowned special forces operative and mercenary commander. He founded U.S. Army Special Forces Unit FOXHOUND, along with the mercenary company Militaires Sans Frontières, and was one of the founding members of the Patriots. Big Boss later established the military states of Outer Heaven and Zanzibar Land as bases for his companies, in order to realize his ambitions of creating a nation for soldiers. Considered by some as "The Greatest Warrior of the 20th Century," he earned such monikers as "the Legendary Soldier" and "the Legendary Mercenary," feared in combat by both friend and foe as a hero and a madman.
During the Cold War, Big Boss was an apprentice to The Boss, the so-called "Mother of Special Forces," and later served as a black ops field agent for the CIA's FOX Unit, under Major Zero.
Having his genetic code used as part of the government project Les Enfants Terribles, Big Boss was the genetic father of Solid Snake, Liquid Snake and Solidus Snake. He was also the mental and physical template for his body double and former subordinate, Venom Snake, with whom he shared the title of "Big Boss."
In the non-canon Snake's Revenge, Big Boss was revealed to have adopted cybernetic enhancements after narrowly surviving his defeat in the NES version of the game, and attempted to exact revenge on Lt. Solid Snake three years later until his former subordinate outsmarted him by tricking him into leaving his command room (which doubled as a life support system for him) and blowing up his soles. Likewise, although he does not appear in the non-canon Metal Gear: Ghost Babel, he is frequently alluded to posthumously.

Years later, he was used to plant the seeds of Les Enfants Terribles, a project designed to create cloned super soldiers. The three Snakes—Liquid, Solid, and Solidus—were thus born. He would then embrace his name, Big Boss, and duel Solid Snake."

Trivia[]
- In the NES version of Metal Gear, although Big Boss himself is in the game, the American manual omitted him, replacing his respective roles of leader of FOXHOUND and Outer Heaven with Commander South and Colonel Vermon CaTaffy, respectively, due to loose standards regarding localizing storylines in manuals at the time. Something similar occurred with the non-canon sequel Snake's Revenge, where Big Boss's role as the secret antagonist of the game was replaced with Higharolla Kockamammie. The names were a reference to Oliver North, Muammar al-Ghaddafi, and Ayatollah Khomeini, respectively.
