Boom Boom from Super Mario 3D Land.
|First appearance||Super Mario Bros. 3|
|Voiced by||Lani Minella|
Boom Boom is a mini boss in Mario series. He first appeared in the game Super Mario Bros. 3 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. He appears at the end of most fortress in each world, and over time, he becomes better with each fight.
Boom Boom wouldn't appear again until he was brought back in Super Mario 3D Land as a boss at the end of airships. There is a female Boom Boom variant called Pom Pom that appears in his place sometimes. Due to the ambiguity of the manuals and guides, it is unclear if there is a single Boom Boom or it is a species
Appearance and Behavior
Boom Boom resembles a larger muscular Koopa Troopa with two large arms and a red shell. In his original incarnation, he has retractable spikes and sometimes he replaces his arms with wings.
When Boom Boom is fought, he comes out swinging his arms until he is hit. If he has wings, he flies around instead. Upon being hit, he retracts into his shell where he is invulnerable. In the 2D platformers, he displays his spikes which can hurt Mario when he jumps on top. After retracting into his shell, he can jump really high or, go back to flying if he has wings. Before the final hit, Boom Boom charges erratically.
To beat him, Mario needs to either jump on his head three times or hit him with fireballs or hammers enough.
Super Mario Bros. 3
Boom Boom made his debut guarding the fortresses in Super Mario Bros. 3. When defeated, he drops a magical orb that destroys the castle. He also appears in the airship and on the tanks in Dark Land as a miniboss. In some appearances, he gains wings or jumps around a lot. In the e-reader levels in the GBA remake, some levels have the player fight multiple at the same time.
Forms of Boom Boom
- Standard Boom Boom - most appearances
- Winged Boom Boom - Appears in World 3, World 5's 2nd fortress, World 6's first fortress, World 7's first fortress, World 8's Airship and 2nd Tanks
Super Mario 3D Land and World
Boom Boom makes his return as the airship boss, sharing the role with his boomerang wielding partner, Pom Pom. This iteration is larger than his 2D Platformer counterpart but, he loses the spikes. His main attack now is to spin rapidly with his fists out but, he becomes easily dizzy and easy to hit. When hit, Boom Boom can also attack by retreating into his large shell and then spinning fast in random directions. In Special World 8 - Crown, he works together with Pom Pom with his shell now spitting out flames.
In Super Mario 3D World, Boom Boom commands the Tank Army levels, appearing as the boss of World 2, first boss of World 6 and in the Boss Blitz in World Flower-12. Pom Pom is in charge of the train levels. In his first and last appearances, he repeats his old strategy except now he turns almost invisible when in his shell. In the World 6 fight, he loses his invisibility in exchange for the ability to copy his shell when spinning. In the game's ending, he is upset about Bowser being trapped, and Pom Pom tries to cheer him up.
New Super Mario Bros. U
Boom Boom makes his 2D return in this title, behaving similar to how he did in Super Mario Bros. 3, with his role now being the guardian of each tower except for Screwtop Tower and Slide Lift Tower. Before each fight, Kamek will appear casting magic on Boom Boom to grant him different ability.
Super Mario Run
Boom Boom retains his New Super Mario Bros. U appearance in this game, and takes on the role of airship boss in all 3 airship levels.
