Digimon is a Japanese media franchise encompassing video games, virtual pet toys, anime, manga, films and a trading card game. It takes place in a digital universe with digital monsters that live in said universe. Digimon was created by Akiyoshi Hongo, and the company that publishes the video games is Bandai (now Bandai Namco Games); while it's anime is made by many developers. The goal in most of the video games is to save the digital world from danger.
Digimon started out a little virtual pet that you had to take care of. It could die of age, hunger, sickness, or it could get injured from fighting. The series was inspired by tamogotchi. It was made in Hongo's mind "A Tamogotchi for boys...". Most of the Digimon games are in a role-playing actions game format (despite the series starting as a life simulation series), but the series also has a number of other genres including life simulation, adventure, video card game, strategy, fighting and racing games. The first actual video game Digimon World was released in 1999 on the PlayStation, before the anime, in Japan. It was later released worldwide the following year.
Digimon is still running; being 1997–present. In North America Nicktoons is airing new episodes of Digimon Fusion, and games are still being made. Netflix is streaming the first three seasons in Japanese and English, as well as an English Digimon Fusion in North America. A new season of Digimon was announced sometime in summer of 2014, it will include the original cast of the first season in high school. All of the voice actors are reported to return, and it's set realese date is in 2015.[1]It is under the name "Digimon Adventure Tri".
Digimon All-Star Rumble was released in fall of 2014 for NA and Europe which will be the first Digimon game to be released in North America and Europe since Digimon World Championship which was released in 2008. Japan still doesn't have a set release date. This was done because of the petition for Digimon World Re:Digitize: Decode; Bandai Namco Games realized it and wanted to please an American audience on a safer and cheaper route than translating text[2]. The game will feature the Digimon's dubbed voices and attack names.
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth was be released on the PlayStation Vita in Japan on March 12, 2015. This shows that the series is still running strong. As well as Digimon World Re:Digitize: Decode there is a petition to get the game released in North America as well.
At the Anime Expo 2015 it was announced by Bandai Namco that Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth would be released in both North America and European nations sometime in 2016 on both the PlayStation 4 console and PS Vita handheld. It has been confirmed that on the PlayStation 4 console it would be distributed both physically and digitally, but it would only be distributed digitally on the PlayStation Vita handheld in North America[3]. In Europe, the game will only be distributed digitally on both systems. Bandai Namco did this because of the petition, and they stated they wanted to "Make the fans happy".
On July 14th, 2015 Bandai Namco Games leaked a new Digimon game for the PlayStation Vita handheld titled Digimon World: Next Order. The game is planned was released on Vita in Japan in 2016. In September 2016, it was announced that the game would be heading to the west, as well as Japan on the PS4 system, sometime in 2017.
