Disney Electronic Content is a division of The Walt Disney Company that publishes video games based on Disney franchises and original concepts that can potentially become franchises of their own. There are several affiliate companies that develop games for Disney Interactive Studios, including: Avalanche Software, Fall Line Studio, Propaganda Games, Black Rock Studio, Wideload Games Inc. and Junction Point Studios.
History[]
Disney Interactive Studios also license their characters and properties to other publishers, like THQ for their Disney/Pixar games and Square Enix for their Kingdom Hearts games. With the purchase of LucasArts by the Parent Company Disney in 2013, Disney Interactive Studios now has the rights to create games based on the Indiana Jones and Star Wars franchises.
On May 10th, 2016, along with the proposed closure of the development studio Avalanche Software, discontinuing production of the Disney Infinity franchise and the announcement of a loss of $147 million for the interactive division, Disney announced to cease publishing games. Future Disney games were from then on released as licensed products developed and published by other companies.
In 2018, Disney returned to publishing as Disney Electronic Content, starting with retro compilations of classic Disney games, Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King. They licensed out the retail distribution of these titles to other publishers and most titles based on Disney properties are still produced by other companies with supervision by Disney.
