Cave Story 3D is a Nintendo 3DS video game released by NIS America and developed by Nicalis. Atlus assisted in the manufacturing of the product. It is a remake of the popular freeware video game Cave Story completely redone with 3D graphics. This is the third iteration of the game released on a Nintendo platform, and the first one to be released through retail. Every aspect of the game has been revamped, turning the popular sprite-based characters, objects and locations into 3D polygons. The developers admit that with the original Cave Story, there wasn't much they could do with layers because of its 2D style. With 3D, however, they were able to add several layers and accordingly include more background objects, thus increasing the 3D depth.

A map is placed on the bottom screen to assist in the navigation of the game's world. Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya, the game's creator, claims that this and several other enhancements were made because of player feedback from the WiiWare and DSiWare versions of the game, saying that he felt that it's "important to have an understanding of what players want, and assess whether or not something improves the overall experience."
