The Fire Spitter is a small, black ball-like which spits fire in Super Mario 64. It will spit fire at Mario if he gets too close to it. It has no face. They are invisible at all and there's no way to defeat them.
A broken Fire Spitter won't spit fire at Mario and they won't move.

Fire Spitters were replaced by Fire Chomps in Super Mario 64 DS. They can only be defeated by Yoshi by eating them. Eating it will spit fire.
