Kokiri's Emerald

The Kokiri Emerald.

The Kokiri Emerald is a key item in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It is the Spiritual Stone of the Forest, and represents the Goddess of Courage, Farore, who bestowed life on the land of Hyrule. One of the three Spiritual Stones entrusted to the leaders of the three races allied with the King of Hyrule, it is needed to open the door to the Master Sword's chamber inside the Temple of Time. The Kokiri Emerald is guarded by the Great Deku Tree, guardian deity of the forest and leader of the Kokiri people.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time[]

Shortly before the events of Ocarina of Time, the Gerudo king, Ganondorf, met with the Deku Tree and tried to obtain the Kokiri Emerald but was refused. In retaliation, he cast a death curse on the Deku Tree using his dark magic, causing the Deku Tree to become sick with disease and parasites. Sensing that he didn't have much time left. The Deku Tree sent the fairy Navi to retrieve Link, an orphaned Hylian child he had adopted during the civil war and test to see if he possessed the qualities of a hero. Link entered the Deku Tree's body and slew the monster, Gohma, that was the source of the death curse, curing the Deku Tree, but was too late to save his father-figure who dies shortly thereafter. With his last words, the Deku Tree tells Link of the creation of Hyrule, the Triforce and the danger that Ganondorf poses. For demonstrating his courage, Link receives the Kokiri Emerald and is told to seek Princess Zelda however to do so he must leave Kokiri Forest and the world he has known all his life.

Trivia[]

  • The Kokiri Emerald is the only Spiritual Stone to be given to Link by a race's guardian deity rather than one of the racial leaders. Though it can argued that the Deku Tree plays a more active role as leader of the Kokiri society, as Mido's rule is largely self proclaimed and Saria takes a more informal role to leadership.
