Manaphy(JP) is a species of Pokémon in the series of the same name. It is a Water-type Mythical Pokémon that made its first appearance in Pikachu's Ocean Adventure and Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea before debuting in the fourth generation games Diamond and Pearl.
Manaphy has the unusual ability to breed despite being a Mythical Pokémon, although it can only be bred with Ditto due to being a gender-unknown Pokémon. Manaphy's offspring are Phione, which do not evolve into Manaphy.
Physiology and Behaviour[]
Manaphy is a small, blue, aquatic Pokémon with stubby feet and club-like arms that are longer than its body. It has a red gem on its chest and a yellow dot below the gem. Its onion-shaped head has a pair of long blue antennae, which have small spheres on the ends. Its irises are dark blue with yellow sclerae, and there are two yellow dots of "eyelash" markings extending from the eyes.
Eighty percent of Manaphy's body is made of water. It is highly susceptible to its environment and swims long distances to return to its birthplace. It is born with a special power that allows it to bond with any Pokémon. Manaphy can switch the perspective of people, and Pokémon, with each other using Heart Swap. Manaphy has been referred to as Prince of the Sea. As seen in the anime, Manaphy is capable of learning and speaking the human language. Manaphy is capable of creating Phione. Despite resembling Phione, the connection between the two is unknown at this point.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness: While exploring Surrounded Sea, the player's team finds a Wonder Egg that hatches into a Manaphy. They look after it for a while but it becomes sick from spending too long out of the sea. Chatot arranges for Manaphy to live with a Walrein. He returns soon after the defeat of Darkrai to officially join the team now that he has grown up. Manaphy loves to explore and discovered the Marine Resort. Manaphy also loves Gummis, especially the Blue Gummi due to being a Water type.
Pokémon Magikarp Jump: A Manaphy may randomly appear in the pond. Tapping it triggers the "Food Fever" event.
Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon: Manaphy returns, giving the player a request meet at the bottom of Seafloor Ruins. Connecting with Manaphy and Phione also leads to the player connecting with Walrein.
Super Smash Bros. series[]
Manaphy appeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii within a Poké Ball. Once this occurred, Manaphy would switch the bodies of the opponents by using Heart Swap. After a short time, everything will go back to normal. Manaphy also appeared as a collectible trophy and as a sticker.
In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Manaphy appears as an occasional stage hazard in the Flood Chamber of the Kalos Pokémon League stage. Appearing rarely, it will use Whirlpool to create a maelstrom on the floor of the stage, sucking in any fighters standing in the water in an attempt to KO them.

"A Seafaring Pokémon. Eighty percent of its body is made of water. It has the ability Hydration, which allows it to heal status effects at the end of a turn if it's raining. It is the only Pokémon that can use the stat-effect-swapping move called Heart Swap. Place a Manaphy and a Ditto in a Pokémon Day Care, and they will produce an Egg that contains a Phione."

Manaphy made its official debut in Pikachu's Ocean Adventure in an opening sequence and starred in Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea.
In Pikachu, What's This Key?, Meowth, Wobbuffet, and Inkay visited a Manaphy courtesy of Klefki's keys. They witnessed it in a water world full of floating spheres of water, before being launched into the sky by a Wailord.
Origin and inspiration[]
Manaphy may be based on sea angels, tiny transparent ocean mollusks. The Manaphy Egg's design is similar to Turritopsis dohrnii.
Manaphy's trait of only being able to produce Phione as offspring may be inspired by eusociality, a biological phenomenon which usually manifests in a colony of animals having a sole breeding female, or queen, tended to by her usually infertile offspring, or an example of a highly rare and unique mutations such albinism or polydactyly. With Manaphy's title as the "Prince[ss] of the Sea" and Phione's unclear status as Mythical, it may also take influence from the illegitimate children of royalty and nobility, whose worthiness to inherit their parents' status is often disputed.

Game locations[]
Manaphy is only obtainable from events but, every Pokémon Ranger game can provide one Manaphy Egg with the original Pokémon Ranger having it be completely offline and using a code. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Manaphy is obtainable for the first time, located in Seaside Hollow, in which Mantyke, Buizel and Overqwil are required to catch Manaphy.
