The Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot was a time-limited poll event added to the official Smash Bros. website that allowed players to request characters for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.
Overview[]
In this site, players were presented with a small form where they add the character's name and game of origin, as well the reasoning for the desired character. Players could enter their suggestions until October 3, 2015.
The results from different regions were taken and compiled, with characters from previous haves being put together with newcomers. Nintendo considered the characters' results in each reason, as well as the realizability of the character. According to director Masahiro Sakurai, the ballot received about 1.8 million valid votes (excluding things like multiple votes from the same person).[1]
Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII was the most requested fighter from the entire Final Fantasy franchise. Meanwhile, Bayonetta was the most requested character in the European region, and among the "Top 5" in North America, where she was considered to be the most requested worldwide, to date.[2] Sakurai also explicitly stated that Bayonetta was the winner among the "realizable and negotiable characters".
Later, the votes would be implemented into Ultimate, according to Sakurai, where the highly-voted characters included King K. Rool, Ridley, Simon, Banjo and Kazooie, and Richter.[3] In the August Nintendo Direct for Ultimate, Sakurai has stated that Chrom and Dark Samus have been "highly requested", though he doesn't refer explicitly to the ballot.
In "The Final Mr. Sakurai Presents" video, he revealed that Sora from Kingdom Hearts was the most requested fighter upon reveal, next to Bayonetta. He also confirmed the usage of the ballot for Ultimate. Afterwards, Sakurai revealed that during the time of the ballot, he and Satoru Iwata discussed and made the decision to privatize the final results.[4]
