Warner Bros. Games (also known as Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment) is the video game division for Warner Bros. Discovery that handles licensing and distribution of games based on Warner Bros. properties as well as owning a few developers.

History[]

The company was established in 1993 as Time Warner Interactive after Warner Bros. acquired Atari Games. Time Warner would soon sell Time Warner Interactive to WMS Industries while holding onto the name Warner Bros. Interactive.

As Warner Bros. Interactive, the company started to license out video game properties starting with Batman Forever but, it wouldn't fully fund and publish themselves until 2007 with Justice League Heroes.

In 2007, Warner Bros. acquired the company TT Games and obtained the exclusive rights to the Lego franchise. In 2009, with the collapse of Midway, Warner Bros. purchased the majority of assets from the company including classic Midway games like Mortal Kombat and Spy Hunter. They turned Midway's Chicago studio into NetherRealm Studios.

In January 2017, Warner Bros. announced it acquired Avalanche Software from Disney Interactive, along with all their software. The studio has so far only released Cars 3: Driven to Win.

Instead, in May 2021, AT&T announced that it was splitting off WarnerMedia for about $43 billion, where it will be merged with Discovery, Inc. into a new venture. As part of this sale, there were rumors that only portions of WBIE would be moved with the bulk of the other WarnerMedia properties, but WBIE will be retained under the new merged company, set to be named Warner Bros. Discovery. Playdemic will be one of the few properties divested from the merger, with it being in the pending acquisition of being sold to Electronic Arts for $1.4 billion in June 2021 with the acquisition to be completed by 2022. The Electronic Arts' acquisition of Playdemic was completed on September 20, 2021. It was announced on April 7, 2022, that Warner Bros. Games was reorganized with streaming services HBO Max and Discovery+ to form Warner Bros. Discovery Global Streaming & Interactive Entertainment, to be overseen by JB Perrette; WB Games president David Haddad would report directly to Perrette.
