Great Fairies (JP) are recurring characters in The Legend of Zelda series. They are powerful, magical beings that act as leaders for the Fairy race. Great Fairies take the form of large, beautiful women wearing very little clothing, and while they are highly capricious, they have been known to help adventurers who possess courageous hearts. In many games they aid Link by teaching him magic or offering him magical weapons sometimes as a reward for helping them in some way. They live in Great Fairy Fountains in hidden spots across Hyrule.

They first appeared in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for the SNES, where there were three different Great Fairies, each one updating different items.

In The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, the fairies would update his shield, boomerang (Waterfall of Wishing fairy), tempered sword, arrows (Pyramid of Power Fairy), arrows, and bombs (Queen of Fairies). The great fairies in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time gave Link new powers, rather than updated items. In the sequel to Ocarina titled The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, once you resurrected the five great fairies, the would give you special items such as the Magic Meter and so forth.

In The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords, a Great Fairy would appear after you defeat a boss and would give you a special key. In The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, there were once again multiple different Great Fairies, each one giving you upgrades on items. In The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, the Great Fairies would update your bomb bag, wallet, and quiver, as well as restore your health.

In The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, five Great Fairies would appear in the Cave of Ordeals, where they would send out many little fairies that would restore Link's health. If you found the final Great Fairy, she would give you the Great Fairy's Tears which would be placed in a bottle.

In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, four Great Fairies, Cotera, Tera, Kaysa and Mija, and Malanya appear in each of their respective regions where they require a certain number of Rupees to restore their power, which was lost over the course of the Age of Burning Fields since people stopped visiting them. They will upgrade Link's Armor in exchange for Materials to enhance their defense as well as granting bonus benefits when upgraded a few more times.

Finally, in their most recent appearance, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, the Great Fairies are unlockable fighters that the player can add to their roster. Once the Akkala Tower Scenario is completed, four sidequests involving thse Great Fairies become available each time one of them is completed. Fulfilling all of the sidequests will unlock them as playable characters.
