Kirby's Block Ball is a Game Boy video game released in 1995 by Nintendo and HAL Laboratory. Shigeru Miyamoto and Gunpei Yokoi both served as the game's producers. The game is based on the arcade hit Breakout, but instead of using a standard ball, you use Kirby to break the blocks. The game was also released on Virtual Console for the 3DS in 2012, and it also appears in a non-playable form in Kirby's Dream Collection.

Gameplay

In the game you'll control the paddle or paddles (depending on which stage you're playing on) to hit Kirby, who's in the shape of a ball. Once a paddle hits Kirby, he'll shoot off and ram through blocks and enemies. The goal of each stage is to destroy all of the blocks on a stage, which will allow you to go onto the next stage. On some stages there are four paddles, one on the left, one on the right, one at the top and one on the bottom. When this is the case, pressing left and right on the d-pad controls both the top and bottom paddles at the same time while pressing the up and down buttons on the d-pad will cause the paddles on the left and right to move at the same time. In traditional Kirby fashion, Kirby will gain copy abilities which will help him in various ways. The special abilities include:

  • Spark: Once Kirby presses the B button when he has the spark copy ability, sparks will fly and Kirby will plow through blocks without them even effecting him.
  • Stone: This will make you drop right where you are.
  • Needle: The needle has two purposes. For one, if you're in the air, then using the needles will cause Kirby to eject needles from his body, which will destroy enemies and blocks. If you use needle while you're about to hit a block, then you will stick to the block, allowing you to choose when you shoot off again rather than it automatically happening.
  • Burning: When you press the B button, Kirby will shoot upwards in a ball of fire then go down at an angle.
