Legendary Pokémon are types of Pokémon species that appear in every Pokémon video game. They are rare Pokémon that are not only hard to catch, but can also be hard to find. Each game has a certain amount of Legendary Pokémon, with Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire having the most (a whopping 32). Usually, the cover mascot for a Pokémon video game is a Legendary, however some games such as Pokémon Red and LeafGreen feature the final evolved form of a starter Pokémon on their box art.

The following is a list of all of the 56 different legendary Pokémon, and which generation they starred in.

A legendary pokemon called "The Guardian of the Sea'', Lugia lies sleeping at the bottom of the ocean. When it rouses and flies,the flapping of its wings causes storms that lasts for forty days. Lugia is the mascot for Pokemon Silver and SoulSilver .
The guardian of the skies, and one of the two generation II legendary bird Pokémon, and is the Mascot for Pokemon Gold and HeartGold. Ho-oh flies about the world on rainbow-clored wings.Those who gaze upon it are blessed with happiness.

A dragon-like beast associated with the sky, who can calm strong weathers. It is the mascot for Pokémon Emerald. Rayquaza lives within the ozone layer, high up above the clouds, so it's impossible to see this pokemon from the ground. It lives on airborne particles and moisture. It once stopped Groudon and Kyogre's battles.
One of the three lake guardians, Mesprit is known as the "Being of Emotions". Mesprit taught the nobility of sorrow, pain, and joy. It sleeps at the bottom of a lake, but at times its soul slips out of its physical body to fly.

In the Sinnoh region it's regarded as a deity; the legends say that the flow of time began with Dialga's birth.

It is said to represent the crescent moon. It can wake up those who have been trapped in Darkrai's nightmares.

Water makes up 80% of its body. This pokemon is easily affected by its environment. It is born with a wondrous power that lets it bond with any pokemon.

Despite being an event Pokémon, it is mentioned in the games outside of events. Appearing on the night of a full moon, Darkrai has the dangerous power to put humans to sleep and make them dream in order to gain energy.
