Captain Linebeck (JP) is a main character in the Nintendo DS video game The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. During the whole game, he'll take Link across the sea via his steamboat in hopes that he'll get a nice amount of treasure in the end. He agrees to go along after he learns that the treasure that he seeks is found on the ship that kidnapped Tetra.

Personality[]

Linebeck is a greedy sailor/pirate who goes on an adventure with Link for the sake of receiving treasure. He is cowardly, making up excuses to stay behind with the ship while Link goes into dungeons. Linebeck calls Link rude names and orders him around at the beginning of the game, but his attitude gradually changes, to the extent that he saves Link when Bellum captures him (Which results in Linebeck being possessed by Bellum). Linebeck and Ciela often fight but they too come to like each other by the end of the game.

History[]

Adult Timeline[]

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass[]

Prior to the events of the game, Linebeck was Jolene's sailing partner after he accidentally saved her from a monster. Linebeck eventually stole some of the treasures they discovered and ran away with them. This led Jolene to search for him to have her revenge. Just before the start of the game, Linebeck visited Oshus and Ciela in their house on Mercay Island to ask them about the Ghost Ship. Link meets Linebeck for the first time in the Temple of the Ocean King on the same island after being told to search for him by Oshus.

Link finds him on the first floor of the temple where he is trapped by spikes. He tell Link to help him as he says that he hurt his ankle, which is proved to be false as soon as Link help him to escape as he immediatly start to run off while telling Link to continue searching for the sea chart hidden on the first floor. After that, Link and Linebeck agree to work together to rescue Tetra from the Ghost Ship. Linebeck is promised the treasures found on the Ghost Ship as his reward to help Link.

On their travels, they may encounter Jolene who will board their ship and fight Link while Linebeck is hidding in a crate. After a few encounters, Jolene finally gives up and hint at the fact that she still has some emotional attachement to Linebeck. Link and Linebeck work together until they manage to board the Ghost Ship and find a petrified Tetra. Then Oshus reveal himself as the Ocean King, the deity protecting this alternate world. Oshus tell the duo that the Ghost Ship was created by an evil creature known as Bellum to attract those who seeks treasures and then drain their lifeforces. Upon learning that there never was any treasure, Linebeck refuses to let Link continue to use his ship until Oshus promise him a wish if he continues to help them.

After Link defeats Bellum in the Temple of the Ocean King, he returns to the S.S. Linebeck and withness Tetra's return. She is immediatly captured by a vengeful Bellum who departs for the Ghost Ship. Link and Linebeck use the ship to destroy the Ghost Ship in naval combat. When they board the floating remains of the Ghost Ship to retrieve Tetra, they are attacked by Bellum who destroy the S.S. Linebeck alongside Oshus' human body and then incapacitate Link and Tetra. Linebeck takes the Phantom Sword and uses it to slash Bellum and free Link. Bellum immediatly attach himself to Linebeck and possess him in a last ditch effort to get rid of Link.

Bellumbeck

Bellumbeck.

Bellumbeck, the monster that result from this possession, is Linebeck in Phantom armor with bellum attached to his back. During the fight, Bellum captures Ciela with his tentacles to prevent her from giving Link the ability to stop time. Link must destabilize Bellumbeck with his sword to allow Ciela to briefly free herself from Bellum's grasp and give him the ability to stop time. Link must then wait for Bellum to open his eye located on Bellumbeck's back and then stop time and attack it. This must be repeated until Bellum is destroyed and Linebeck is finally freed.

With Bellum finally destroyed, Oshus retrieve his power and return to his original form. He then offers a wish to Linebeck like he promised. Linebeck only wish for his ship to be repaired. The Ocean King then reveal to Link and Tetra that they are no longer in their world but in a parralel world, which is under his protection and that they only came here due to Bellum's powers. He then returns them to their world where only 10 minutes have passed. They are not sure if their adventure was real but then Link realize that he still has the empty Phantom Hourglass in his pockets. He then notice Linebeck's ship on the horizon, indicating that the captain followed them to their world.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks[]

After the events of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Linebeck finds his way to New Hyrule. He eventually has a son with an unknown woman, which they named Linebeck II. Linebeck also found a Regal Ring, which he had hidden in case his descendants needed some money during hard times. Linebeck then wrote a riddle leading to his treasure on a letter that he left for them and died soon after. He was then burried near his treasure. Link eventually ran into his grandson, Linebeck III, who needed a lot of money to fix a bridge leading to the Ocean Realm. The two then solve the riddle and use Linebeck's treasure to pay for a new bridge.
