Luma first appeared in Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii. It grants Mario different abilities like his spin attack, acting as slingshots to shoot Mario to other planets or areas, or transforming into items that Mario can use when fed their only food source, Star Bits. They come in a variety of colors, each able to transform into different things. There is also a hungry Luma that allows access to rare areas when fed several Star Bits, up to hundreds at a time. Rosalina and Polari look after the Lumas.

Lumas returned in Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the Wii. In the cooperative mode, the second player controls an orange Luma, replacing the pointer from Super Mario Galaxy.

Legacy

After their appearance in Super Mario Galaxy, Lumas appeared in both the sequel to the game, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and in Mario Kart Wii. In Mario Kart Wii, a Luma would rotate around the playable character Rosalina.
