Mar10 Day is the holiday for the fictional character Mario. The day is on March 10. The reason that it is featured on this day is:

  • "Mar10", short for "March 10," looks like "Mario"

History[]

Origin[]

In 2015, Nintendo of America posted a tweet on its Twitter account where the company wished the YouTube channel Smosh Games a happy Mario Day and asked the channel what was its favorite moment in a Super Mario game.[1] Another tweet celebrating the holiday was posted by Nintendo UK, where the company asked players which Super Mario game they were playing on that day.[2]

2016[]

In 2016, Nintendo celebrated the holiday by releasing a video on its official YouTube channel titled "Celebrate Mar. 10 - Mario Day!" The video is about a person in a Mario costume walking around Nintendo's office, turning things into Super Mario-related objects such as turning notepads into Nintendo 3DS systems. The person also adds Super Mario-related objects to the office such as several Super Mario plushies to a person's desk.[3]

2017[]

In 2017, Nintendo celebrated the holiday by adding a free Super Mario-themed frame to Facebook and the Messenger Camera that could be used from March 10 at 5 a.m. PT until March 12 at 11:59 p.m. PT.,[4] by putting several Super Mario games on sale on Amazon, and by having several My Nintendo rewards for Super Mario titles such as a 30% off discount on Mario Kart 8. Nintendo also worked with the [[wikipedia:Starlight Children's Foundation}} by providing new designs for its gowns while making a donation to create 2,000 gowns.[4] A quiz was published that year on the Play Nintendo website in celebration of Mario Day.

2018[]

In 2018, Nintendo partnered with Google adding Mario in Google Maps, where the user can have Mario drive around in a Pipe Frame. Users had to look for a ? Block next to the start button when the start and destination fields were filled.[5][6] Nintendo also held an in-game event in Super Mario Run, called "It's All About Mario Event," where all Mario-related items are in fixed appearance rates in Super Bonus Game. At the same time, Nintendo offered a special 50% discount for the full game. Several rewards for My Nintendo include the "Mario's Mighty Mustache" 3DS theme.[6]

Special events for Mario Day were held in other Nintendo games. In Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, items from the Super Mario franchise were available to craft for a limited time.[7][8]

2019[]

In 2019, Nintendo released a promotion in Europe where buyers who purchased Super Mario Odyssey, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Party, or Mario Tennis Aces between the 8th and 10th of March would receive double Gold Points.[9] In North America, Nintendo released several My Nintendo discounts on Super Mario games,[10] discounted download codes for the games that where included in the My Nintendo promotion in Europe to cost $39.99 from participating retailers,[11] and discounted Nintendo Switch systems with one of five select Super Mario games to cost $329.98.[12]

Nintendo also released an episode of Nintendo Minute on its official YouTube channel titled "Mar10 Day Character Bracket: Mario’s Enemies - Nintendo Minute." In this video, series' hosts Kit and Krysta rank several Super Mario enemies based on several categories, such as which would be the most annoying pet.[13] Nintendo of America made a celebratory tweet for the holiday asking how fans will celebrate Mar10 Day.[14] There were also several Super Mario-related activities that took place at Nintendo New York, which were sponsored by Frito-Lay Variety Packs.[12]

The event "It's All About Mario Event" returned in Super Mario Run, and the player was given 10 Rally Tickets as a log-in bonus. In Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, Mario's hat and outfit were gifted for all players,[15] and several Super Mario-themed wallpaper and flooring were available for crafting.[16] Several of the furniture from the prior Mario-related event returned, and the Fishing Tourney 12 for the game featured Cheep Cheeps, Eep Cheeps, Cheep Chomps, and Bloopers as catchable fish.[17]

2020[]

The Mario Bros. Tour in Mario Kart Tour featured Mario and Luigi wearing their Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels outfits, respectively, and ran until the actual Mario Day. Select Super Mario games had a $20 discount in the US eShop resulting in $39.99 from March 8, 2020 (9:00 a.m. PT) to March 14, 2020 (11:59 p.m. PT), them being Super Mario Maker 2, Super Mario Party, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, and Yoshi's Crafted World.[18] LEGO and Nintendo released short videos on their Twitter accounts, teasing a LEGO and Super Mario crossover, which was eventually announced as LEGO Super Mario.[19] Unlike in 2017 and 2018, there was no Super Mario crossover event with Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, likely due to them doing an event focusing on the then-impending release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

2021[]

Aside from various events relating to the Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary event such as those included in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, a 35% off sale was held for Super Mario Maker 2, Mario Tennis Aces, Luigi's Mansion 3, and Super Mario Party. The Mario Tour's starting date in Mario Kart Tour also coincides with Mario Day. A special Know Your Nintendo video was also released that day on the official YouTube channel with five questions (three standard questions and two bonus questions) focusing on the Super Mario series.[20]

2022[]

Super Nintendo World in Universal Studios Hollywood was announced to open in 2023.[21] Three new LEGO Super Mario sets and a LEGO Princess Peach were also announced.[22] Various games such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Luigi's Mansion 3 and its DLC packs, Yoshi's Crafted World, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 also received discounts.[23]

2023[]

In 2023, Nintendo issued an official motto for the event, "Every Day Is a Mario Day," used in some promotional material,[24] including a song themed around Mario Day.[25] On March 1, a Super Mario-themed party was held at Nintendo New York, featuring special guests Mario, Luigi, and Ryan Kaji from the YouTube channel Ryan's World. Visitors could meet Ryan and play Nintendo Switch games with him.[26] In Mario Kart Tour, the Mario Tour began on March 7 and ended on March 21, and it ran at the same time as an in-game celebration titled the "Mario event." The final trailer of The Super Mario Bros. Movie premiered in a dedicated Nintendo Direct presentation on March 9, 14:00 PT[27]—in other words, on Mario Day in most countries in the Eastern Hemisphere. Several other movie-related publicity was released during this time, such as a cast interview with Fandango[28] and a theme song singalong on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Falon.[29] An event promoting the film in Super Mario Run began on March 10 and ended on May 31.[30] Wave 4 of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass DLC pack was released on March 10;[31] both Wave 4 of the Booster Course Pass and the aforementioned Mario Tour of Mario Kart Tour introduced Mario Circuit from Mario Kart DS to their respective games. The "Dry Bowser Castle Battle" LEGO Super Mario expansion set and LEGO Donkey Kong were also announced.[32] On March 11, select GameStop stores offered visitors free Super Mario-themed items.[26]

A Nintendo Switch bundle labeled the "Nintendo Switch Mario Choose One Bundle,"[33] which includes a The Super Mario Bros. Movie sticker sheet and a full game download for either Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, or Super Mario Odyssey, was released on Mario Day.[26][34] Select Nintendo Switch games and DLC featuring characters from the Super Mario franchise received digital discounts: The first wave of discounts ran from March 10, 00:00 PT to March 23, 23:59 PT and involved Mario Party Superstars, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, and Yoshi's Crafted World; the second wave lasted from March 24, 00:00 PT to April 7, 23:59 PT and involved Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Super Mario Maker 2, and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury.[26] Similarly, at select retailers between March 5 and March 11, physical editions of certain Super Mario games were discounted by up to $20, while Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit sets were discounted by $40.[26]

2024[]

From March 3 to April 1, users with a Nintendo Switch Online membership that play Super Mario World on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Switch Online application will earn My Nintendo Platinum points to redeem Super Mario World-themed icons for their Nintendo Switch profile.[35][36] A video titled "Mario Through the Years - A Mar10 Day Celebration" was published on Nintendo of America's YouTube channel on March 5, showcasing mainline Super Mario games available on Nintendo Switch at the time.[37] Several rewards for My Nintendo were made available for Mario Day, such as a 14-day free trial for Nintendo Switch Online available from March 3 to 17[38] and sweepstakes for LEGO Super Mario sets (from March 5 to April 16) and Princess Peach-themed clothing by BlackMilk (from March 5 to April 23).[39] A free digital guidebook to The Super Mario Bros. Movie was made available on March 5 for users with a Nintendo Account.[39] A Mario Day event with a Mario and Luigi meet-and-greet, sweepstakes, and a screening of The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be held at Nintendo New York on March 10.[39] Another meet-and-greet event with Mario will be held at Westfield Mall of the Netherlands in Europe.[40] The online Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Open March 2024 Tournament will be held on March 10 from 12:00 to 18:00 PT, with the top 310 players receiving 1,000 My Nintendo Gold points.[39] On March 16, select GameStop stores will hold Super Mario-themed giveaways.[39]

The following titles are discounted on the American Nintendo eShop from March 7 (12:00 a.m. PT) to March 17 (11:59 p.m. PT):[41]

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (33%)
  • Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope (67%)
    • Season Pass (40%)

In addition, Nintendo published a press release on March 10, 2024 announcing that a second animated Mario film would be released in 2026. The same press release also gave a release date for the Switch remakes of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door and Luigi's Mansion 2 as May 23 and June 27, respectively, and also announced the inclusion of the Game Boy versions of Dr. Mario, Mario Tennis, and Mario Golf on the Game Boy module for the Online Service on March 12. Cartoon Network also aired the 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. movie for the first time (despite it obviously not being a cartoon) on the same day; the broadcast was followed up by a rerun of a Robot Chicken episode featuring a Mario Kart/Grand Theft Auto/Resident Evil crossover sketch.
