Meowth (JP) is a species of Pokémon in the game series of the same name. It is a Normal-type Pokémon that made its first appearance in the first generation games Red and Blue. Meowth had two Regional forms. In Alola, it has a Dark-type variant, and in Galar, it has a Steel-type variant, as well as a Gigantamax form. Meowth with the Gigantamax Factor cannot evolve. Meowth became one of the most popular of the 151 species introduced in the first generation and overall all over 1,000 Pokémon, mostly because of its prominent role in the Pokémon anime, being a member of Team Rocket. In Kanto and Alola, Meowth evolves into Persian, while in Galar, Meowth becomes Perrserker.

Physiology and behaviour[]

Meowth is a small, feline Pokémon with cream-colored fur that turns brown at the tips of its hind paws and tail. Its ovoid head features four prominent whiskers, wide eyes with slit pupils, two pointed teeth in the upper jaw, and a gold koban coin embedded in its forehead. Its ears are black with brown interiors and are flanked with an additional pair of long whiskers. Meowth is a quadruped with the ability to walk on its hind legs; while the games almost always depict Meowth on two legs, the anime states that Meowth normally walks on all fours. It can freely manipulate its claws, retracting them when it wants to move silently. The tip of its tail curls tightly.

Meowth is attracted to round and shiny objects and has the unique ability to produce coins using its signature move, Pay Day. Meowth and its evolved forms are the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Pay Day by leveling up. Being nocturnal, it is known to wander about city streets at night and pick up anything that sparkles, including loose change. Upon finding a sparkling object, its eyes will glitter and the coin on its forehead will shine brightly. It shares this intrigue with Murkrow, with whom it often fights with for objects and prey.

Alolan Meowth[]

In Alola, Meowth has a slightly different look. Alolan Meowth's fur is a light blue-gray color. Instead of brown markings, the tip of its tail, whiskers, digits, and the insides of its ears a whitish-gray. Alolan Meowth's whiskers have a slight curve compared to regular Meowth's straighter whiskers, and it has silvery eyes.

Meowth was introduced to Alola as a gift to royalty. The luxurious royal lifestyle soon led to Meowth diverging from its origins and becoming the selfish, prideful, and cunning Alolan Meowth. Alolan Meowth will turn hysterical if its coin or pride are besmirched. When the monarchy fell, the rare Alolan Meowth went feral and eventually grew as common in Alola as anywhere else.

Galarian Meowth[]

Galarian Meowth has a shaggy, greyish-brown coat resembling a beard, as well as yellow eyes and a toothy grin. Its coin is now black and extremely hard, with the darkest and hardest coins being especially valued and respected among the species.

Galarian Meowth's body has partially turned to iron as a result of many years of living with a race of savage seafarers. As a result of many battles, Galarian Meowth develops the ability to evolve into Perrserker, instead of Persian. Kantonian Meowth and Galarian Meowth don't get along.

Gigantamax Meowth[]

Some Kantonian Meowth are capable of Gigantamaxing. As Gigantamax Meowth, it has become larger and longer in size. The body extends from the lower half to the shoulder, while the gold coin gains a symbol. Meowth's eyes change to a glowing gold color. The tail grows long as well, with the end of its tip extending. The tail gets even larger and bumpy when it uses an attack. Three red clouds surround it below the shoulders.

The giant coin on Gigantamax Meowth's head emits a lot of Gigantamax power that surrounds the area with a golden gleam. Its desire for shiny objects increases to the point where it will cause damage to skyscraper windows and exterior walls for the sake of sharpening its claws. The symbol on Gigantamax Meowth's gold coin is believed to be the key to unlocking the secrets of Dynamax.

Appearances[]

Main Pokémon games[]

Meowth was first seen in Pokémon Red and Blue and has been in almost every other Pokémon game since. It is a Scratch Cat Pokémon that is known for its high speed stat and the fact that is one of only two Pokémon to learn Pay Day (the other is its evolution Persian). It evolves into Persian at 28 or Happiness in Alola. It is known to be somewhat similar to other cat Pokémon such as Skitty and Glameow. In Galar, Meowth gained another evolved form in the form of Perrserker, evolving at Level 28. Kantoian Meowth also has a Gigantamax form. Meowth with the Gigantamax Factor cannot evolve. Team Rocket's Meowth appeared in Pokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition and their remakes Pokémon Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.

Other Pokémon games[]

Pokémon Pinball: A Meowth appears in a bonus stage that is accessible from the Blue Table. The player must hit the Meowth and get it to drop gold coins which must be collected.

Pokémon Channel: Meowth appears on the PNF (Pokémon News Flash), along with Psyduck. He goes out and interviews random Pokémon in random locations. Meowth also appears in Pichu Bros. in Party Panic, along with Jessie's Wobbuffet and the Squirtle Squad. He plans a party for himself and invites all the Pokémon from Big Town.

Pokémon Masters EX: Starting on July 1, 2020, Meowth would occasionally appear in the Pokémon Center, stating how he got separated from his teammates Jessie and James while searching for a Mythical Pokémon. They are reunited for the Double Trouble Event.

Super Smash Bros.[]

SSBUMeowth

Meowth in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

It is seen in the Super Smash Bros. series as a Poké Ball Pokémon (except Super Smash Bros. Melee) that throws coins (using the move Pay Day) at the players. It also appears a Sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl that can be used by Pikachu, Jigglypuff, the Pokémon Trainer, and Lucario and boosts the power of their Slash-attribute attacks by 5, and in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Support Spirit that takes up one Spirit slot and boosts the power of thrown items when equipped.

Trophy descriptions[]

Super Smash Bros. Melee[]
  • "This...is Meowth's dream. Meowth strides all over the globe scattering invitations to other Pokémon, insisting they come to "Meowth's Party". At this wonderful party, guests are packed in like sardines as Meowth climbs up the stage with its faithful guitar. It strikes a chord, pauses, and then rocks their world."
Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]
  • "A Scratch Cat Pokémon. It's one of the most famous Pokémon and very fond of things that sparkle--the gold medallion on its head could be seen as an indicator of this infatuation. There are many Pokémon that resemble cats, but Meowth is the only one that can use Pay Day to receive coins at the end of battle. It evolves into Persian."
  • Game Boy: Pokémon Red/Blue
  • Nintendo DS: Pokémon Diamond/Pearl
Super Smash Bros. 4[]
  • NA: "Meowth is a Normal-type, Scratch Cat Pokémon who absolutely loves anything shiny. It's a creature of the night, and it's not unusual to discover a Meowth and a Murkrow fighting over their finds. Meowth's attack Pay Day can deal a ton of damage if an opponent gets caught in it. How purrfect!"
  • EU: "Meowth, a Normal-type Pokémon, loves round, shiny things. It runs around at night, hunting for little treasures and trinkets, but often ends up getting into fights with Murkrow about who'll get to keep them. Watch out for Meowth's Pay Day attack. If it catches you from behind, it can be purralysingly pawerful!"
  • Game Boy: Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue (09/1998)
  • Nintendo 3DS: Pokémon X and Pokémon Y (10/2013)

In the anime[]

Several different Meowth appeared over the Pokémon anime.

Team Rocket's Meowth[]

Team Rocket's Meowth

Team Rocket's Meowth

The most well-known Meowth featured in the anime is a member of Team Rocket, one of the anime's main antagonists for 25 seasons. He is unlike ordinary Meowth in that he can speak human language and walks on two legs instead of four. Alongside fellow Team Rocket members Jessie and James, he engages in various evil schemes, usually attempting to steal Ash Ketchum's Pikachu, but never succeeding. However, due to his unusual traits, he never learned any of his species' attacks, and as such, does not often participate in Pokémon battles. Meowth aims to please Giovanni, to the point that he frequently has bizarre daydreams about what mundane things the boss could do with the Pokémon they're trying to steal (especially in the episodes set in Hoenn and Sinnoh, and occasionally in Unova onwards). In one episode, Meowth is capable of Gigantamax.

Other[]

Meowzie is a female Meowth that Team Rocket's Meowth fell in love with during his days as a stray Pokémon in the streets of Hollywood. Meowzie is the main reason behind Meowth's ability to talk and walk on two legs. He fell in love with her when he was still a stray Pokémon on the streets of Hollywood. "Meowth in Boots" is a Meowth belonging to Tyson, a Trainer from Hoenn, at the Ever Grande Conference; the "Meowth in Boots" defeated Ash's Pikachu in the quarterfinals in At the End of the Fray. Matori owned an Alolan Meowth, even former Team Rocket member Butch. A clone of Team Rocket's Meowth, Meowthtwo, appeared in Pokémon the First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back, Mewtwo Returns and Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution. Galarian Meowth also made several appearances including Just a Scone's Throw From Here! and HZ040.

Meowth made cameos in Pokémon: Twilight Wings (Galar) and Pokémon Evolutions (Kanto).

Origin and inspiration[]

Meowth seems to be based upon the Japanese legend of the 招き猫 Maneki-neko, also known as the lucky cat or beckoning cat. Alolan Meowth appears to be based more on domestic cats that underwent selective breeding, specifically those owned by royalty. Galarian Meowth may be based on Norwegian Forest cats, large fluffy cats with beard-like ruffs, with traits of the Vikings that kept the breed's presumed ancestors on their ships. Gigantamax Meowth's elongated body may be based on the Longcat meme.

Meowth may be a combination of meow (the sound a cat makes), mouth, and wealth, alluding to the Maneki-neko's capacity to bring good fortune. The -th may also be borrowed from Nyarth, as both meow and nyā are onomatopoeia of a cat's cry.

Reception[]

Meowth ranked fourth on Game Daily's top 10 list of Nintendo characters that deserve their own games, describing him (presumably Meowth of the Team Rocket trio, rather than the species as a whole) as "adorable" and explaining that his intelligence and ability to speak gave him more depth than other Pokémon. IGN stated that without the anime, the species would not have been as famous, further describing the character of Team Rocket's Meowth as "probably the funniest part of the show". San Francisco Gate editor Jesse Hamlin stated that the trio's Meowth provided a few laughs in Pokémon the Movie 2000: The Power of One. However, another editor stated it was popular amongst people who have never seen the anime due to being a feline. Author Harry Schlesinger wrote that Meowth was popular among girls. Dale Bishir of IGN described Meowth as the most important Pokémon that impacted the franchise’s history, and further stated that the mascot of Team Rocket, Meowth has endured as the comic-relief of the trio and being one of the few Pokemon that can speak like humans. Steven Bogos of The Escapist listed Meowth as ninth of their favorite Pokemon, describing it as the most charismatic Pokemon of all time.

IGN said that Meowth of Team Rocket would make a good choice as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl: "if Brawl's developers really wanted much more representation for Pokemon as a franchise" also stating "it would be fun to face him in battle as a real fighter, just to be able to send him 'blasting off again.'" GamesRadar described Meowth as "not all that useful", and questioned if the species would have stood out if it were not for its portrayal in the anime.

GamesRadar editor Carolyn Gudmundson described Meowth as being "no slouch" compared to Snorlax, who she described as the greatest Pokémon ever. Fellow GamesRadar editor Justin Towell listed Meowth as one of video games' eight greatest cats, describing it as one of the most memorable species in the series. Authors Tracey West and Katherine Noll called Meowth the number one Normal type Pokémon and the tenth best Pokémon overall. They called its anime representation the "heart and soul of Team Rocket", and praised him as "funny and clever". WhatCulture included Meowth on 10 best First Pokémon Generation Pokemon.

In popular culture[]

A Japanese foodie named Maki Kudo created a series of Pokémon-themed recipes, which were later released in a book called Pokémon Cookbook. One of the recipes he made was "Meowth Mashed Potatoes". Apart from that, Meowth is also an inspiration for other Pokémon-themed recipes.

Trivia[]

  • Meowth is the only Pokémon to have both an Alolan and Galarian form.
  • Meowth is the first Pokémon in Pokémon the Series to talk.
    • It is also the most recurring and famous talking Pokémon.
  • Meowth is the only known Pokémon to have been a Gym Leader, briefly sharing the title with Jessie and James in The Battle of the Badge after they had to fill in for Giovanni.
  • In Go West Young Meowth, it was stated that Meowth of Team Rocket had to learn and practice standing on his hind legs like a human, implying that Meowth as a species is not naturally able to stand on their hind legs. However, almost all sprites in the games and the Pokédex in the anime depict it standing on its hind legs, suggesting Meowth has the natural ability to walk on two legs. Tyson's Meowth is also able to walk on two legs, seemingly naturally.
    • The only time Meowth is depicted on all fours in the games is in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver; when the player places Meowth as the first Pokémon in their party, Meowth will walk on four legs behind the player.
  • Meowth is the first of two Poké Ball Pokémon to skip an installment, the other being Scizor.
  • Meowth, Electrode, and Porygon2 are the only non-Legendary or Mythical Poké Ball Pokémon to have no spoken voice lines.
    • Ironically, despite its Team Rocket anime counterpart being well-known for its ability to talk, Meowth does not vocalize at all in Smash.
