Must See 3-D Sweepstakes was a Virtual Boy launch campaign that had Nintendo teaming up with Blockbuster Video and NBC that allowed consumers to actually rent the Virtual Boy hardware along with three video games at Blockbuster Video for 3 days for a total of $9.99. In addition, once they bring the system back they would be given a coupon that would take $10 off of the Virtual Boy. It was quite the investment for Nintendo, who manufactured 20,000 Virtual Boy systems specifically for the rental chain along with even more video games. Altogether the campaign cost Nintendo $5 million.
