Nintendo European Research & Development (NERD), formerly known as Mobiclip and Actimagine, is a Nintendo division based in France that develop middleware and software technologies for Nintendo systems.
History
Before Nintendo
Actimagine was originally founded in March 2003 by a team of engineers and managers to originally work on video compression technology. Their early works permited an optimized video quality with low battery consumption for various studio like Sony Pictures Digital, Gaumont or Paramount but also for Nintendo's consoles like the Game Boy Advance, the Nintendo DS and the Wii.
In 2006, Actimagine raised €3 million in equity financing which allowed the studio to accelerate its business development in the US and Japan. Eventually, their video compression technology was also used for the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U.
As NERD
In October 2011, Mobiclip was bought by Nintendo and renamed "Nintendo European Research & Development" by the Japanese company. They would later develop various middleware technology for the Wii U, the Nintendo DS and Wii emulators for the Wii U Virtual Console, the stable 3D display of the New Nintendo 3DS and the emulators for the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System Classic Edition.
