Origin and inspiration

Oddish is most likely based on the mythical plant, the Mandrake. The Pokédex entry for Pokémon Yellow clearly states it shrieks horribly when you try to pull it out of the ground, which is a trademark trait of Mandrakes.

It's English name is a mix of Odd and Radish. It's Japanese name, Nazonokusa, is literally Mysterious Grass (Nazo no Kusa). The Chinese and Korean names highlight the fact that it is a walking plant.
