The Oil Drum makes its first appearance in the arcade game Donkey Kong, in which Donkey Kong drops an Oil Drum on the barrel that is right behind Mario when he starts the level, producing a Hot Foot, which appears again in Super Mario Bros 3.
Oil Drums appear again in Donkey Kong Country but this time not only do they produce fire but they also produce enemies. An Oil Drum is also a boss in Donkey Kong Country, under the title Dumb Drum, in which a big Oil Drum tries to fall on the Kongs resulting in killing one of them if he suceeds or spits out enemies. After several rounds of ememies the drum attempts to smash the Kongs one last time but blows himself up in doing so.
The Oil Drums appear again in Donkey Kong Land but have the same abilities as in Donkey Kong Country.
In Klubba's Koisk there is a tipped over Oil Drum in the background.
In Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis the Oil Drums work the same way as they do in the arcade title: Donkey Kong. They appear in every level except the final boss.
They also appear in DK: Jungle Climber but under the name Oil Barrel and are now collectible items.
