Phantos are ghost-like mask enemies appearing in Super Mario Bros. 2 that guard the keys throughout the game, although they initially appeared in the Japanese-exclusive game, Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic.

At first sight, these enemies don't move, but if Mario, Luigi, Peach, or Toad pick up a key, a Phanto will start chasing them throughout the level until one of them reaches the locked door with the keyhole and enters the door. These enemies are invincible so it is best if they are just avoided. When the player places the key down, the Phanto will stop chasing them. If picked up again, a Phanto will chase them again.

Phanto also made two appearances in the Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, one in the episode "The Ten Koopmandments", where it chased Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad throughout the pyramid of Koop Tut, and again in "Escape from Koopatraz", as a member of Judge Koopa's jury.

Trivia[]

  • Phantos' names appear to be shortened name versions of the word, phantom, due to their phantom traits.
  • In Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra, an item called the "Phantom Mask" can be purchased.
  • There is a glitch where Phanto can be defeated permanently by using a Timer to freeze time, and using a Star to defeat it. As of Super Mario Advance, this bug was fixed and you can now defeat the enemy with only the Super Star.
