Popeye no Eigo Asobi(JP) (translated as Popeye's English Game) is an educational video game for the Famicom and the successor to the Popeye title released in arcades. The game, developed by Nintendo R&D1, is often considered the predecessor to Donkey Kong Jr. Math, which was released worldwide (Popeye no Eigo Asobi is a Japanese exclusive title). The game is intended to teach Japanese people how to speak the English language. Like the arcade game before it, this title features the properties from the favourite 1930s television cartoon Popeye. The sprites have been ripped from the arcade game.

Gameplay[]

There are two modes in the game, Word Puzzle and Word Catcher. Word Puzzle features two separate modes itself: Word Puzzle A and Word Puzzle B, with the latter being slightly harder than the former.

Word Puzzle[]

In Word Puzzle, you can choose from two different modes with minor differences from each other. Word Puzzle A will give you a clue to the answer in the Japanese language, whereas Word Puzzle B will not provide such a hint (making it harder). In the game, you'll choose from six different categories. Following this, Olive will ask the player to spell out a word that she wants. The catch is that the player must spell it using the rules of the English language instead of spelling it out in their native language of Japanese. To do this, the player will control Popeye and make him move under a letter (of the English language). Once you find the letter you wish to choose, then you must press the A button to enter it. Messing up ten times will result in a game over. Each time you make a mistake, Bluto, the game and franchises' antagonist, will move Swee'Pea across clothesline a little bit. After ten mistakes she'll fall off the clothesline. If you finish the game without making ten mistakes, then you win. The six different categories that you can choose from are Animals, Country, Food, Sports, Science, and Other.
