Professor Samuel Oak (オーキド・ユキナリ博士, Dr. Yukinari Okido, Ōkido-Hakase and Orchid are also seen) is a Pokémon Professor who lives and works at his research lab in Pallet Town of the Kanto region. According to Professor Elm, Oak concentrates on Pokémon and human relationships as a profession.

Oak PokémonGS

Oak from Gold and Silver.

Professor Oak gave Red/Leaf and Blue their starting Pokémon so that they would start their journey as Pokémon trainers. After the player brings back the Oak's Parcel from Viridian City, the professor will show both children his new invention, the PokéDex and assigns them the task to complete its information, as he'd always wanted when he was young. Professor Oak was an old friend of the Elite Four Agatha when young, but she began to see him as too soft and fool when he quit his life of Pokémon trainer, and went to do research.

Three years later, during the events of Pokémon Gold and Silver, Professor Oak becomes more of a celebrity because of his radio show with DJ Mary. At first, he didn't plan to accept, but Mary ended up convincing him. He first meets Gold/Kris at the house of Mr. Pokémon, and gives him/her the PokéDex. Much later in the game, when the player has acquired 16 badges from both Kanto and Johto, he grants the player access to Mt. Silver. Professor Oak has also been a long-time friend of Kurt, a Poké Ball expert, and of Professor Elm.

Professor Rowan is also a good friend of Oak's, who often visits the Sinnoh region. He has a house in Eterna City, and, when he meets Lucas and Dawn for the first time, he shows them the Pal Park, upgrades their PokéDex to become National, and gives them the PokéRadar. He also gives the player a letter which allows him/her to get to the legendary Pokémon Shaymin.
