The Runaway Five (Tonzura Brothers in Japan) are a fictional jazz band from the SNES game EarthBound. The band is composed of five members, as the name indicates, who perform on various theaters including the Chaos Theater in Twoson and the Topolla Theater in Fourside. They can be commonly found with big debts.

The Runaway Five is first seen in the Chaos Theater in Twoson. They cannot stop performing there because they ended up with a $10,000 debt. However, once Everdred gives Ness the wad of bills after he saved Paula Polestar, the band is freed. Regular buses cannot reach Threed because of tunnel ghosts, so they offer Ness a ride, as their bus makes enough noise to scare ghosts away. The band leaves the party in Threed, and then goes to Fourside.

There, by the time Ness and his friends arrive, they are again found with a large debt, this time bigger than the previous one. A second time, Ness offers a diamond, given to him by Gerardo Montague, to the owner of the theater so that the Runaway Five can leave. They repay this act by deactivating the Clumsy Robot Ness, Jeff, and Paula are fighting against in the Monotoli Building in Fourside. During the battle with Giygas, many people Ness's party has met start praying for their safety. A member from the Runaway Five is one of them, and encourages the rest into doing so.

Band members[]

The band is composed of five members. Lucky and Gorgeous are the lead members of the Runaway Five. They both sing and dance during their performances, while the other members are instrumentalists. They play the bass, the drums, and the saxophone. The drummer is also the driver of the band's tour bus. A sixth person plays the keyboard when they are performing. However, because he never appears outside performances, he may not be really a member of the Runaway Five, but just a house keyboardist.

Trivia[]

In the opening from Super Smash Bros. Melee, two members of the Runaway Five can be seen nearly being run over by Ness. In addition in the Onett stage from Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, one can see a sign the regular camera does not show which reads: "Caution, A black van driven by this guy (seen in the picture right of the message) has been spotted driving recklessly through town. Be careful!". Truly, the Runaway Five bus is one of the vehicles that can hit the players standing on the street.
