Tecmo Bowl is a football game for the NES that allows gamers to play against teams in eleven, single elimination games or play against another player in action or coach mode.

This game is currently available in the Wii's Virtual Console in both NES and arcade versions.

[edit] Criticism

The game has been criticized for its lack of realism. The AI in the game has been criticized as being unrealistic. Bo Jackson is the most powerful player in the game while a few little-known players are amazingly skilled.

The game also lacks many important features for a football game. The clock is permanently set at 5:00. This clock is accelerated, making for incredibly short games. Touchbacks and fair catches are impossible. Penalties are almost impossible to commit, and even when they occur they are not called. Two point conversions are nonexistent.

[edit] Tecmo Super Bowl

Tecmo Super Bowl was released for the SNES, and made major changes to the game.

  • In preseason and Pro Bowl mode, the clock can be set to 15:00. The clock is still accelerated, however.
  • Touchbacks are now possible. Fair catches are still nonexistent, however.
  • Team logos are in the endzones as opposed to the Tecmo logo. However, each team logo is used for their corresponding side.
  • Three seasons can now be played: 1994, 1995, and 1996. Because the NFL had not considered expansion at the time, the Panthers and Jaguars will not exist in the 1995 and 1996 seasons. Additionally, the Browns will still exist in 1996 as the thought of the Browns moving to Baltimore was unconsidered in 1993.
