A Thwomp is an enemy species in the Mario Series. The species first appearance was in Super Mario Bros. 3 for the NES where they would wait in the air, then crash down on you once you past them. They later appeared in many other games such as Super Mario 64, the Paper Mario series, the Mario Kart series, and others. These "Thwomps" are related to Whomps, which are similar to thwomps with legs. A rarely known fact about thwomps is that they not only appear in the Mario series but also in some Zelda games such as "Link's Awakening".
