Vaati is a character in The Legend of Zelda series who first appeared in The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords. He is the second most recurring antagonist in the series following Ganon, starring in all three Four Sword related games. He first received his back story in The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, where he was the main villain and boss of the game.

The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

Vaati is the main enemy in The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap. Vaati was originally a Minish and used to be a student of Ezlo, back when Ezlo was a sage. One day, Vaati learned of a special hat that would grant all of his wishes. Tempted by its powers, he stole it and used it to turn his master into a hat in an attempt to stop him from interfering with his plans. Vaati then used the hat's magic to take the shape of a hylian sorcerer, planning to take control of the Light Force at the Picori Festival in Hyrule. Vaati participated in a sword-fighting tournament and was allowed to see the Bound Chest after winning it. Believing the chest contained the Light Force he opened it, releasing monsters into Hyrule. Realizing his mistake he leaves to search elsewhere, but not before destroying the Picori Blade and turning Princess Zelda into stone.

The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords

Following his actions in The Minish Cap, Vaati became trapped in the Four Sword. One day Zelda senses that the seal is weakening, and goes to check on it with Link. Just then Vaati escapes, kidnaps Princess Zelda and flees to his palace. Link takes the sword, turning into four, and sets out to save Zelda. In this appearance Vaati seems to permanently have been trapped in is final transformation from the Minish Cap.

The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures

Vaati was trapped in the Four Sword again following the final confrontation, but when Dark Links starts appearing in Hyrule, Link is tricked to drag the Four Sword. Vaati is once again released from the sword and starts to cause chaos around the land. Link eventually defeats Vaati once and for all, only to find that Ganon is the true mastermind behind all of the trouble.

Possible Origins

Several fans speculate that Vaati might be Ghirahim reincarnated. Demise's curse was that darkness would reappear for Link and Zelda's descendants. Given how Ghirahim decayed along with Demise, this could imply that Ghirahim is under the effects of this curse as well. This is further supported by Vaati's similar appearance to Ghirahim, as well as his desires to free Ganon in Four Sword Adventures and obtain the Triforce otherwise.
