The Divine Beast Vah Ruta is a Divine Beast and dungeon featured in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Like every other Divine Beasts, Ruta was created by the ancient Sheikah to weaken Calamity Ganon. It was piloted by the hero of the Zora, Princess Mipha, until her death at the hands of the Waterblight Ganon.

10,000 years before Breath of the Wild[]
The Divine Beast Vah Ruta was created over 10,000 years before the events of Breath of the Wild by the Sheikah, along with the other Divine Beasts and the Guardians, to combat Calamity Ganon. At the time, four Champions were chosen to pilot the Divine Beasts, who directly attacked Ganon to held the princess of Hyrule and the chosen hero wielding the Master Sword. They succeeded and Ganon was sealed away for more than 10,000 years.
Rediscovering the Divine Beasts[]
110 years before the events of Breath of the Wild, the Royal Family of Hyrule was warned by a fortune teller of the return of Ganon. In preparation of his return, the Divine Beasts were rediscovered after being excavated and like in the old legend, four Champions were chosen to pilot them. The Zora Champion, Mipha, was chosen to pilot the Divine Beast Vah Ruta.
100 years before Breath of the Wild[]
However, despite the efforts of the Royal Family, Calamity Ganon surprised them by corrupting and taking control of the ancient Sheikah technology. Waterblight Ganon, a being created by Calamity Ganon was sent to kill Mipha and take control of the Divine Beast. Princess Zelda used her power to contain Ganon in Hyrule Castle and his influence on the Divine Beasts was loosened.
During Breath of the Wild[]
A century later, Calamity Ganon's power grew strong enough to remotely control the Divine Beasts once more even if he was still imprisoned in the castle. Vah Ruta created a torrential downpour in the Lanayru Great Spring. After his awakening, Link eventually headed to the Zora's Domain and with the help of Sidon reached the Divine Beast and defeated waterblight Ganon who was still in control of the Divine Beast. After the defeat of the creature, the spirit of Mipha took control over the Beast and placed it in firing position with Ganon as target. For freeing the Zora, Link is rewarded with Mipha's Grace, which allow him to protect himself from death once before needing to be recharged and a Heart Container.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity[]
Divine Beast Vah Ruta plays a major role in the game and Mipha is chosen to control it to fight back at Calamity Ganon and takes advantage of its water and ice attacks as well as its sheer strength to cause much destruction in its wake. Mipha and Zelda discover Vah Ruta and the former controls it to save her father from an electric Moblin as well as her people who live in Zora's Domain. When the Great Calamity came to be, Ganon sends shards of itself to the Divine Beasts with intent to seize them and take out the Champions; however, as Terrako has call forth the future warriors via time portals, Waterblight Ganon's attempted murder is thwarted, Mipha lives on, and Vah Ruta remains in her control. Mipha works together with Prince Sidon to successfully defend Akkala Citadel from the corrupted Guardians and monsters, assisted Urbosa at Fort Hateno and eventually used its powerful laser to weaken Calamity Ganon with the other surviving Champions.
