Wave Race 64 is a racing game for the Nintendo 64. It is a sequel to the Game Boy video game Wave Race which was released four years earlier. A third Wave Race game was developed for the Nintendo GameCube, Wave Race: Blue Storm. The game features character that would later appear as cameos in 1080° Avalanche and Super Smash Bros. Melee (trophy).

Gameplay[]

Wave Race 64 features nine different race courses all designed to challenge the player in different ways. There are four different playable characters each with different statistics. The four characters include Ryota Hayami from Japan, Dave Mariner and Ayumi Stewart from the United States, and Miles Jeter from Canada. In each race, the player must complete three laps in order to finish it. The ultimate goal is to get in first place. As the player progresses, the courses get harder (as do the opponents). In all there are three difficulty settings.

Re-releases[]

Virtual Console[]

When Wave Race 64 was released to the Virtual Console, the Kawasaki ads in the game were replaced with Wii and Nintendo DS ads (despite neither console existing when the game originally came out), as Nintendo's license to use the Kawasaki logo had expired. However, when it was released on the Wii U Virtual Console, the Kawasaki banners and logos were restored.

Nintendo Switch Online[]

Wave Race 64 was included as part of the Nintendo 64 Online library on August 19, 2022, accessible through the Nintendo Switch Online's Expansion Pack add-on.

Legacy[]

The director of Wave Race 64, Katsuya Eguchi, was the producer of Wii Sports Resort and said that his involvement in Wave Race 64 assisted in the creation of the jet ski mode in the game. Characters from Wave Race 64 later made cameos in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
