Waddle Dee (JP) are a species in the Kirby series, first appearing in Kirby's Dream Land. They are carefree and easygoing creatures and the most common residents of Dream Land. An uncountable number of them live and work in Castle Dedede as soldiers and servants under the command of Bandana Waddle Dee, and while they are often clumsy and scatterbrained, they are nonetheless hard workers. Waddle Dees are for the most part peaceful and wouldn't harm a fly, however, they are easily bribed by the promise of food and shelter and as a result frequently find themselves working for antagonistic forces such as Queen Sectonia and the Haltmann Works Company.

In the games, they appear as both enemies and NPCs. As enemies they are typically the weakest and most basic enemies encountered, lacking any inherent abilities comparable to the Mario series's Goomba or Shy Guy. Their main (and only) method of attack without a weapon is merely walking into Kirby, doing basic collision damage, although some leap into the air randomly. Like Shy Guys, Waddle Dee are often seen wielding a variety of weapons and tools to make up for their inherent weakness; such as carrying parasols, allowing them to float down slowly, spears, thrown for a ranged attack and even mounts and vehicles with a variety of abilities. Many of these tools and be stolen by Kirby when he inhales the Waddle Dee using it. There are also variants of Waddle Dee such as the hard to inhale Big Waddle Dee and treasure hoarding Gold Waddle Dee.

Appearance[]

Waddle Dees are small, round creatures with stubby arms and feet, giving them an appearance very similar to Kirby's. They have red or orange skin and tan pear shaped faces with no mouth.

Appearances[]

Kirby series[]

Waddle Dees have appeared in every Kirby video game and in each one their behavior is mostly the same. They walk back and forth, occasionally jumping for no apparent reason. Sometimes they can be seen floating down on a parasol. A friendly Waddle Dee appears in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. One also appears in Kirby: Canvas Curse as a playable character, unlocked by beating the game once.

Super Smash Bros. series[]

Waddle Dee have appeared in both Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Waddle Dee is represented by a trophy. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Waddle Dee is used in King Dedede's side B attack Waddle Dee Toss. He is also seen in the Subspace Emissary in a cutscene that involves Luigi, Wario and King Dedede. The following are the trophy descriptions of Waddle Dee in the Super Smash Bros. series:

Super Smash Bros. Melee

"Many delicate creatures like this one inhabit Dream Land. They generally live carefree lives and have never considered themselves to be followers of King Dedede. Waddle Dees are innocent and generally harmless to man and beast. While they have virtually no offensive or defensive power, they'll sometimes try to wield a parasol."

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

"A carefree creature that wanders the hills and dales of Dream Land. Basically harmless to creatures great and small, Waddle Dees sometimes use parasols to float down through the skies. If Kirby swallows a parasol, he'll get one he can use to float or ward off enemy attacks. On the other hand, Kirby can't copy anything by swallowing Waddle Dees themselves."

Sub Species[]

Parasol Waddle Dee[]

The second most common form of Waddle Dee. It is a regular Waddle Dee that floats down from the top of the screen while holding a red and white parasol topped with a yellow star. Kirby can get the Parasol ability if he inhales one before it lets go of its parasol (though he can also inhale just the parasol). In Kirby Super Star Parasol Waddle Dee is the helper for the Parasol ability and has the same abilities as Parasol Kirby.
